What a dispensary security officer actually does
- Controls the door. Only registered patients, caregivers and staff enter the dispensing area; vendors and visitors are logged and escorted. Officers never handle product and never enter the vault.
- Watches the lot. Most dispensary robberies begin outside: a car idling in the corner, someone photographing the entrance, a customer followed to a vehicle. Officers patrol the lot, walk employees out at night and note plates.
- De-escalates. A patient whose card has expired, an intoxicated visitor, a customer who is angry about a limit — the officer resolves it calmly and lawfully, and the budtender never has to.
- Responds correctly. Armed officers are trained to protect life, not product: comply, observe, report, secure the scene, preserve video and make a good witness. Post orders are written with your SOPs and reviewed with your compliance team.
